Grace: A Low-Key Luxury Residence Design with Feng-Shui Elements

Designing a Calm and Flexible Space for Family Gatherings

The core of the Grace project lies in the client's status and the route. The design team carefully considered the clients' needs as executives in the finance industry who frequently host gatherings with friends and family. To accommodate these requirements, glass and concealed sliding doors were used to create a semi-open extension, forming multiple layers of variation while maintaining independence, privacy, and flexibility.

The foyer, installed with moru glass, preserves privacy while emphasizing the independence of the study room entrance, which is separated by a hidden sliding door. The gray-colored living room wall is complemented with pine and cypress patterns, symbolizing the image of "climbing up with supports." In the study room, a snowflake-shaped mineral slab adorns the back wall, while a painting of a horse symbolizes a successful career. On the other side, the natural jade vista is decorated with a golden haze on its dappled gray wall, creating a serene and luxurious ambiance.

Technological innovation played a significant role in the realization of this design. The dining table in the restaurant area features a ceramic tile top and an Indian black antique side table. The designer chose the antique surface to avoid visible scratches over time, ensuring easy maintenance and longevity.

The Grace residence spans an area of 247.9 square meters and includes three bedrooms, a living room, a dining room, and four bathrooms. To address Feng-Shui concerns caused by the entrance door facing the bedroom door, the master bedroom door was relocated, and the original location was transformed into a marble vista wall. The study room and living room are separated by a semi-open TV wall, while the entrance is discreetly separated from the study by moru glass and a hidden sliding door.

One of the design's highlights is its interaction with the users. With children in elementary and junior high school and frequent gatherings, the study room's privacy and flexibility are crucial. The hidden sliding door allows for different uses of the space, such as transforming it into a temporary guest room when needed. Additionally, the sofa bed can be converted into a bed, providing additional sleeping arrangements.

The Grace project was completed in June 2022 in Taiwan. The design team conducted extensive research to understand the clients' preferences and needs. The couple's treasure of family and friendships is evident throughout the design, with a focus on the planning of the living and dining rooms. The minimalist design of the ceiling with lines and shadows and the semi-open TV wall create a sense of openness and comfort.

Overcoming challenges was an integral part of the design process. The large beam between the study room and the living room, as well as the distorted space formed by the intersection of two square patterns, posed significant obstacles. To address these issues, a marble TV wall was used to separate the space, creating a visual extension through its upper and lower void effect. Tawney glass was also employed to cover the large beams and columns, enhancing transparency and openness.

The Grace residence's dark gray color palette is accentuated with gold and snowflake mineral slabs, resulting in a luxurious aesthetic that exudes sophistication and understated elegance. The dark Indian antique surfaces of the restaurant's kitchen island, the metallic lacquered stylized wine cabinet, the gray glass with embedded lighting, and the mineral slabs shine brightly, while the exquisite dining room and wine cabinet echo the clients' work positions and convey a sense of cherishing good times with family and friends.

The Grace residence, designed by Hung-Hui Lu, has been recognized for its outstanding creativity and ingenuity. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2023. This prestigious accolade acknowledges designs that incorporate best practices in art, science, design, and technology, contributing to quality of life improvements and making the world a better place.
